About us

The Independent Midwives Association (AMI) is a non-profit organization that, for over 11 years, has been supporting women, mothers, children and families in Romania. We continuously work to strengthen and promote the midwifery profession in Romania.

We provide health services for women, pregnant women, young people, mothers and newborns, medical services and health system navigation for vulnerable and refugee people, as well as actions to protect women's reproductive health rights and to prevent and address sexual and gender-based violence.

Currently, at the Independent Midwives Association we provide monthly services and activities for more than 5,000 beneficiaries, mainly access to medical services, health system navigation, translation, for vulnerable women and children, including refugees, various activities for Ukrainian children and adolescents, as well as trainings for medical staff, with the aim to achieve better linkage of levels of care with each other and to provide comprehensive, safe and equitable health services according to international best practices and evidence-based recommendations.

At the same time, the AMI team manages projects ranging from health services for pregnant women, mothers and newborns, health services and health system navigation for vulnerable and refugee people, call center dedicated to health services, as well as advocacy projects to protect women’s rights to sexual and reproductive health and to prevent sexual and gender-based violence for adolescents and women.

As part of the international organizations European Midwives Association (EMA) and International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), we have a mission to reform and strengthen the midwifery profession in Romania.
