The year 2022 was atypical for everyone in the context of the war in Ukraine. At the Independent Midwives Association, we have mobilized most of our resources to provide support and safety to people who have taken refuge in our country.
From the beginning of the war (February 24, 2022) until March 2023, more than 120,000 people, mostly women and children, took refuge in Romania (1).
Most of them needed assistance, either urgent medical help, medical services, shelter, food, clothing and basic necessities, or access to maternal and child health services, sexual and reproductive health, Romanian and English language classes, education and recreational activities for children, legal, psychological and social support, along with translation services, registration with the family doctor, or integration activities for adolescents, information and prevention of gender-based violence. From March 2022, we have provided a dedicated call center for people in Ukraine.
During all this time, at the Independent Midwives Association we have provided support in all these areas in over 45,000 cases, mainly for women and children
