Increasing women’s access to accessible and safe reproductive health services

Consistent and up-to-date policies on access to family planning, contraception, sexual and reproductive health education and free access to abortion on demand are some of the main solutions to increase women’s access to accessible and safe reproductive health services.

Consistent and up-to-date policies on access to family planning, contraception, sexual and reproductive health education and free access to abortion on demand are some of the main solutions to increase women’s access to accessible and safe reproductive health services.

This is why, together with more than 250 Romanian and international civil society organizations , we call on the Minister of Health and the National Health Insurance House (CNAS) to pay for abortion on demand from the budget of the Single National Health Insurance Fund (FNUASS).

The payment from the state budget of abortion on demand would bring Romania into the ranks of European countries where abortion is already covered by state health insurance: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

We are fighting for sexual and reproductive rights in Romania and to ensure that women have universal and safe access to this health service, regardless of their vulnerabilities and identities.

At the same time, in support of this approach, we organized in Bucharest, from November 18 to December 10, 2022, with the support of the international organizations VOICE, Médecins du Monde and Center for Reproductive Rights, the event “What to do when there is no choice - An immersive experience about access to abortion in Romania”, in which we showed in practice the obstacles women in Romania face when accessing abortion on demand.

The immersive experience we organized was attended by 82 people, including ambassadors and representatives of foreign embassies in Romania, the country representative of the World Health Organization, representatives of the Ministry of Family, Youth and Equal Opportunities, the Prime Minister's Office and the National Health Quality Management Authority, representatives of the Romanian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, of the National Coalition Life without Violence of the Republic of Moldova, MEPs, MPs, senators, presidents of political parties and representatives of the international organizations Médecins du Monde and VOICE, OXFAM, as well as numerous representatives of civil society and activists.

The video includes filmed excerpts from the immersive experience about unsafe abortion. The experience consisted of physical interaction with the actors and the space, and the footage captures the actors’ interaction with the participants along the route of the performative installation.
